The File Share slider resource adds a "slider bar" to the Sharing Setup dialog. This allows you to change the speed with which other users can access your machine under personal File Share. It can also be useful if you access your Mac across the network, and want to increase your access speed.
To install the resource, follow these steps:
1) Disable file sharing.
2) Copy the Network Extension from the Extensions folder within the System folder.
3) Start ResEdit (version 2.1 or later).
4) Open the FileShare Slider resource. The only thing in the file is an fvew
resource. Double-click the resource, and then Copy the resource (this
copies resource ID 24501 only).
5) Open the Network Extension >>>copy<<<. Double click on the fvew resource,
and select Paste. When you are prompted, tell it YES -- it's OK to replace
the existing resource ID.
6) Save the changes in the Network Extension Copy.
7) Quit ResEdit.
The Network Extension file is in use whenever a 7.0 Mac is turned on. So, to replace
the old file with your new version, you need to:
1) Remove the old Network Extension from the System (Extensions) folder. Leave
it on the desktop.
2) Place the copy you have edited into the Extensions folder, and rename it to
Network Extension.
3) Restart the Mac.
4) Turn on file sharing.
5) Throw away (or keep in a safe place) the old, un-hacked version of the Network
Extension.
That's it! Now, when you do Sharing Setup, you will have a slider bar to vary the
"share" that users are given when logging onto your machine.
The slider existed in the betas of 7.0 up through b4, but was, for some reason,
removed from the first final....
